Parallel to the development of the new 7 series, the new one has long been in the background BMW 5 Series G30 worked. The successor to the F10 generation uses the BMW 35up architecture and, like the 7 Series, should be considerably lighter than the current generation. This is made possible by the use of carbon elements, which, together with other lightweight materials, are supposed to reduce weight by up to 200 kilograms.
Very close to the Nurburgring Nordschleife, an Autogespot.com user has now caught the upcoming BMW 5 Series Touring G31 on a test drive, which will go on sale around six months after the sedan (G30). Naturally, the Touring has a typical station wagon rear end and accordingly offers more cargo space than the notchback version.
Despite the strong camouflage, the BMW 5 Series G31 is clearly recognizable on the Erlkonig photos as a luxury class station wagon from Munich, the roofline, which can hardly be camouflaged, is strongly reminiscent of the current 5 Series Touring F11. Even if the prototype hardly allows any conclusions to be drawn about the series design, a direct connection between the kidneys and headlights can also be expected in the 5 Series.
In order to further reduce fleet consumption — which is particularly relevant in the business class that is often ordered by companies and fleet customers — BMW is not only relying on lightweight construction, but also on more economical drive trains.
Although the new three-cylinder engines do not play a role in the BMW 5 Series G30, in addition to turbocharged four and six-cylinder engines, there will also be hybrid models with an electrified drive train. What is certain is that there will be at least one plug-in hybrid with a four-cylinder gasoline engine and electric motor — the BMW X5 eDrive, which will be coming in 2015, also uses a very similar drive train.
The seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series will be presented in 2016, but according to the current status, the market will not be launched until the beginning of 2017. The new BMW 5 Series Touring G31 will follow in the course of summer 2017.
