As in previous years, they were Engine of the Year Awards 2015 a reason to celebrate for the BMW Group’s engine technicians. The renowned engine Oscars were awarded again today and were dominated by BMW this year: In addition to the overall victory in the “Engine of the Year 2015” category, the Munich-based company was able to win three other categories.
The main reason for the successful award ceremony is the complex plug-in hybrid drive train of the BMW i8, because the drive, which consists of a turbo three-cylinder (B38) and an electric motor, was successful in three categories. The 362 hp concept was successful in the 1.4 to 1.8 liter displacement and Best New Engine categories, and the international jury of experts ultimately selected the i8 drive as the overall winner of this year’s competition among all the class winners.
The Munich-based company can look forward to another class win in the 2.5 to 3.0 liter displacement category traditionally dominated by BMW in-line six-cylinder engines . BMW engines also came in second, fourth and fifth in this category.
The BMW Group has celebrated a total of 62 class wins since 1999, making it the most successful brand at the “Motor Oscars” by a clear margin over Volkswagen (30), Toyota (22), Honda (22) and Mercedes (12). In addition, there are 7 class wins for the multi-victorious four-cylinder turbo engine with 1.6 liter displacement, developed in Munich, whose manufacturer is listed by the jury as “BMW-PSA”.
